Why it exists
A loyalty card only works if the customer has it on them. A paper card gets lost, and it tells the shop nothing about who comes back.
Oktapus gathers all of a customer's cards in a single app, and gives the shop a one-second gesture at the counter.
What we built
For customers, an app where each shop has its own card, with its name, its colour and its reward. The customer adds it by scanning the shop's poster.
For shops, Oktapus Pro, on the phone or tablet they already own: they tap their contactless card on the customer's phone, or scan the customer's code. Every stamp shows up in a dashboard, with the date and the team member who gave it, and a mistake is undone in one gesture.
How we worked
The product started by putting the card in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. The limits of those two wallets, starting with very poor notifications, moved us to a full app.
We built first what has to work perfectly before anything else: giving the stamp, seeing it reach the customer, and being able to correct it.
Where it stands
Oktapus is live at oktapus.app, with a free plan to start and a paid plan that adds the contactless card, at prices published on the site. It works in every country and in nine languages. The apps are coming to the App Store and Google Play; until then, the website takes over at the counter.
It is one of our own products, built and run in-house.
Built with
- React Native
- Next.js
- Supabase
Oktapus is built with React Native and Next.js on Supabase: an app for customers, an app for the shop, Oktapus Pro, and a website that also serves as a fallback at the counter. Most of the work is in the moment the stamp lands: it has to arrive within a second, with the contactless card as with the scan, and stay right even when the network drops.
